1. Required joint behaviour

The first question is whether the pipe joint must remain rigid or accommodate movement.

Where the system requires fixed pipe positioning and controlled alignment, a rigid coupling may be appropriate. Where movement, deflection or vibration must be accommodated within defined limits, a flexible coupling may be considered.

The decision should be based on the piping design rather than installer preference alone.

2. Working pressure

The coupling must have a working-pressure rating suitable for the system.

5. Gasket material and service conditions

The gasket creates the seal between the connected pipe ends. Its material must be compatible with the fluid, temperature and operating conditions.
