The connection is formed on the external surface of the pipe. This helps preserve the internal diameter and interior surface of the piping while supporting efficient installation, inspection, maintenance and future system modification.

Rigid couplings restrain the connected pipe ends and support controlled pipe positioning where joint movement is not intended. The appropriate coupling should be selected according to the complete piping design, including pressure, pipe dimensions, groove compatibility, movement requirements, gasket material and support arrangement.
